PSHE

At St Lawrences, we incorporate PSHE (personal, social and health education) into our everyday school life; that is to say that a lot of our lessons cover many aspects of these key life skills implicitly.

We aim to develop a climate where pupils learn to understand and monitor their own feelings as well as feel empowered to seek support should they need it. We embed this  in PSHE lessons and across the wider curriculum, where skills such as resilience, perseverance and independence are celebrated.

At St Lawrence we are an inclusive community where all children (and adults) aim high, work to the best of their ability and develop a strong sense of self-confidence and positive wellbeing.

At St Lawrence we support the children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. A strong sense of community and the wider-world is central to our ethos and this equips children with the knowledge, skills and strategies to live healthy, happy, full, safe and responsible lives allowing them to "soar on wings like eagles".

Our PSHE curriculum covers all areas of the subject. One PSHE lesson per week is timetabled throughout Key Stage One and Two, although teachers are able to use their judgement to adapt this as necessary. In the Foundation Stage, PSHE is an integral part of the topic work covered throughout the entire year; many aspects of the Early Learning Goals are steered towards children’s physical and emotional development and wellbeing. There are many other opportunities where children are involved in PSHE outside the direct lessons, including assemblies where a range of themes are covered. Some other discreet links include assemblies, visitors from different faiths and backgrounds, cross-curriculum teaching and also includes the additional responsibilities children take on in school, such as prefects, music captains and sports leaders.

Monitoring and assessment is an ongoing process for PSHE and wellbeing; teachers use their assessment for learning as necessary, as well as monitoring  children’s learning through individual and group work. The implementation of PSHE, both inside and outside of lessons, plays an integral role in developing our children’s self-confidence and an increased understanding of the impact that individuals’ actions can have on their own and others’ lives. Children demonstrate a progression of knowledge and skills throughout their school life, which they continuously build on and embed.
